How to Determine Whether a Community is Right for You

Integrating into a healthy community that aligns with your lifestyle is a key aspect of moving. It’s essential that you select an area with a community that adds value to your life. How can you determine what that community looks like, though? And is it really worth passing up otherwise-excellent opportunities to pursue the ideal community?

The answer is a resounding yes. The community you live in will determine how you live your day-to-day life.

Regardless of the community you’re on the seeking to call home, here are a few tips to help you determine whether or not a community is right for you.

Take advantage of local resources

If you have friends who live in the area you’re looking to move to, this is a great opportunity to connect; and, if not, be on the lookout for local walking tours or opportunities for short-term rental stays. This is a great opportunity to “try out” life in a neighborhood you’re unfamiliar with. Getting a feel for the day-to-day movement of a community is an excellent way to keep your thumb on the pulse of the area.

Speaking to friends and family who live nearby will also give you a good insight into the aspects of life in the area. Talk to locals to get feedback on the quality of life, commute times, cultural outlets, and other aspects of the community that could impact your choice.

Take a staycation

Consider a staycation.  This will give you a chance to practice living in the community– everything from eating and commuting to shopping and exercising can look vastly different from one area to the next.

Consider your current lifestyle and how it translates to the new area. Are there enough fun things to do? Can you navigate it well? Focus on what’s important to you and seek out opportunities to test the local waters.

Take note of HOA perks

If it’s likely you’ll wind up in an HOA after your move, you’ll be well-served by conducting some research on the matter ahead of time. Selecting a community with a homeowners association will grant you access to amenities that contribute to a greater sense of community. Check out details about access to community recreational opportunities like clubhouses, pools, or golf courses.

Start envisioning your new life

At some point, you’ll need to turn your reflections inward to determine whether a community is the best fit for you. Ask yourself how you’d feel about living in the area– do the amenities meet your needs? How will you achieve a work/life balance? What recreational outlets are available? All of these questions are crucial to making a well-informed decision.
