Finding a new home in Johnston County, the hottest place in the Triangle

Mar 15, 2023

Raleigh is the place to be in 2023. But as the Triangle continues to grow, the urban centers like Raleigh, Durham, and Cary aren’t the only hot locations. In fact, one of the fastest-growing counties in the Triangle is Johnston County, a destination that’s just 30 miles east of Raleigh. If you’re looking for a new home, Johnston County is a place you’ll want to explore. Here are a few reasons why.

Johnston County is growing in appeal

The 2020 Census data showed that Johnston County outpaced both Wake and Mecklenburg Counties at a massive 28 percent growth rate over the last decade. What’s responsible for this growth? Location and opportunity. Despite its growth, the county has been able to maintain its small-town charm. It’s a short commute to the city, yet it gives its residents room to breathe.

But don’t let that idea of “small town” fool you. Johnston County is the place to be, with new amenities but a rich history that are part of its draw.

Its communities are part of the charm

Much of the growth within the county can be credited to Clayton, which has itself experienced massive growth. A town of nearly 25,000 people, Clayton is home to outstanding parks, a distinct craft beverage scene, public art and mural trails, outstanding dining, and so much more.

The smaller towns throughout the area are growing, too, but they’ve retained the charm they are known for. For example, the small community of Four Oaks is a destination for history buffs and nature lovers. Selma is a town of just over 7,000 residents, and it’s filled with unique amenities like an ice cream shop, a roadside food hall with a variety of dining options, boutiques, and garden shops. And Smithfield, a community of around 11,000, is known for its farming, museums, and outlet shops. No matter where you look, Johnston County is full of places to explore. And it’s the best of both worlds: quiet communities, just miles from Raleigh.

Flowers Plantation is breathing new excitement into the area

Flowers Plantation is a new residential community that’s driving even more growth across the county. Located just east of Clayton, this master-planned community is a destination for dining, shopping, hiking, and so much more. It features both a Publix Supermarket and Harris Teeter, and it’s filled with additional conveniences that make it an exciting place to be. Flowers Plantation’s Waterfront District will also feature waterfront restaurants, a tavern, a hotel, and many other businesses that you’ll want to enjoy regularly.

As Flowers Plantation continues to expand, it will drive growth across the area. With over 150,000 square feet of commercial space and an additional 350,000 under development, it will be a hub for activities for residents across the county.
